Marc’s trip report – island hopping in the Caribbean

Having been on countless holidays and fam trips to the various islands of the Indian Ocean (from Lamu to Zanzibar, Mnemba to Benguerra, the Seychelles to Pemba, Madagascar to Mauritius) it was time to branch out to the Caribbean.

Previously I had taken a trip which started in Cuba, then Holbox in Mexico and travelling down through Central America to see the best of the beaches and islands in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama but this time it was to visit the more obvious parts of the Caribbean.

Many people tend to fly into a single beach location, such as Antigua, Barbados or Grenada, as travelling between the islands can be time consuming and difficult but I wanted to look at the feasibility of combining a number of different locations; one country that has a number of islands that are readily connectable is St Vincent and the Grenadines.

I started my trip with a flight from the UK to Barbados. From then it is a cheap and easy regular schedule flight to get to Union island. Palm island (my first port of call) is a private island reachable by 10 min boat ride from Union and is a sister hotel to the much larger Galley Bay resort in Antigua. With only 40 or so rooms Palm island really is an amazing desert island experience.

To avoid taking an expensive flight to Bequia I took a catamaran (4 hours) through the Tobago Cays to arrive at Bequia where I stayed at the newly opened Liming Bequia.  Bequia is a much larger island, ideal for those looking for more activities and potentially nightlife and the Liming luxurious 11 chalets are amazing.

To end my trip I took a short speedboat transfer to Mustique.  There is only on hotel on the island (the Cotton House), which is where many first timers stay.  Repeat guests, especially those with families or larger groups tend to take a private villa, each of which is unique and ultra luxurious and comes with a cook and housekeeper.

From Mustique there is a regular schedule flight to get to back to Barbados and from there (sadly)_home to the UK

Though I love lazing around on a glorious beach I do get a little bored so this island-hopping trip with 4 nights in each hotel was absolutely perfect.
